Calvin Lanpher was hired by Lighting Technologies in May of 2008 as an optical engineer. Since then, he has mostly been involved in optical material measurements and lamp modeling for use in Photopia. He recently began designing optics for lighting projects.
Calvin earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Architectural Engineering in May of 2008. Previously he had attended 2 years at a small alternative liberal arts college called Goddard in the woods of Vermont. There he was allowed to pursue a wide variety of studies including sculpture, dance, Capoeira, theater, Yoga, massage, nutrition, and both herbal and traditional Chinese medicine. After some time in the workforce, Calvin returned to academia in hope of putting his mathematical, scientific, and mechanical aptitudes to use. He completed 4 full years of coursework including several with Prof. David DiLaura.
Calvin has only begun to gain experience in optical design. His previous projects include an extruded aluminum wall wash fixture and an underwater pool light fixture. Much of his experience comes from taking apart and repairing fixtures, visiting manufacturing facilities, and working with fixtures, lamps, and lenses, in both museum and residential settings.
Calvin completed two internships during his college career. The first was with Spector and Associates, an architectural design/ LEED consulting firm. There he was mostly involved in researching sustainable construction materials and methodologies. The second internship was with Robert Singer & associates, an architectural lighting design firm. There he completed drawing revisions, programmed lighting control systems, and played an essential part in onsite lamping, lensing, and aiming. Throughout college, Calvin worked as a Yoga instructor assisting people to “see the light”. He continues to teach Yoga part time in the evenings.
