Photopia can model luminaires constructed from any number of different reflective, transmissive and refractive materials. Lighting Technologies uses a custom built BRDF/BTDF measurement device to accurately characterize the real reflecting / transmitting properties of various materials such as semi-specular aluminum, hammertone, prismatic lenses, perforated diffusers and many others. The measurements are collected for a wide range of light incidence angles to capture the true scattering nature of real materials (see image below). Photopia uses the measured data in lookup table format and therefore does not attempt to “curve fit” the data into standardized equations that do not model the wide range of scattering effects observed in real materials. The library of measured data also eliminates the need for the user to “guess” at the scattering properties of materials. Customers can also submit proprietary materials for measurement, ensuring the most accurate data possible for their analyses.

Photopia comes with a large library of lamp models for use in optical designs. However, our customers frequently use lamps that are not in the standard library because they are new, proprietary, uncommon, etc. In order to provide our customers with the most useful tools possible, we provide a lamp model construction service. First make sure that you have the most up-to-date lamp library by checking our downloads page. We will periodically place new libraries here that contain new lamps and changes to older ones.
