Lofting and Licensing

We're excited about the new features in 3.2, which are laying the groundwork for more great things to come. Lofting for refractors in the Parametric Optical Design Tools allows you to create smooth lenses and will save you tons of design time. A completely re-written licensing system provides great new network features, including check in/out as well as a shared and synced library, with improved stability on slower networks.

Loft Properties

Lofted Refractors

Expanded Parametric Optical Design Tools to allow for lofted refractors. We have a new tutorial which makes use of lofted refractors to create a Type V Square lens. The new tools allow for the following control:

  • aiming by direction or point
  • smooth or prismatic profiles
  • smooth or faceted loft
  • bilaterally, quadrilaterally or completely asymmetric distribution
  • extrude along path

Network Licensing

Completely rewritten licensing provides expanded network licensing functionality, including the ability to check in/out licenses and sync libraries between computers, all with easier setup and activation. There are installation instructions for Photopia 3.2 which walks through each step.

This represents a huge advancement from earlier versions of Photopia. You no longer need Administrative rights to install or license Photopia. Network licensing no longer requires editing registry settings or installing the full version to the server.

CAD Support

New refractor meshes are exported as NURBS surfaces to a 3DM file. This allows for seamless transfer of your true refractor geometry into your CAD program. With this foundation in place, we'll be expanding our support of 3DM to include all geometry in the future. 3DM can be natively imported into many solid modeling programs.

Windows 7 Compatibility

Photopia 3.2 provides full Windows 7 compatibility, which means things are moving around. The program is still stored in your Program Files folder. Any user data, including the Library and Projects folder are now stored in the Program Data or Users folders. This is required by Windows 7 guidelines so that data which is changed (like the Library or preference files) is not located in the Program Files folder.
